From Dream to Reality to Change
ITHAC, the Idaho Transgender Healthcare Advocacy Coalition, is an official 501(c)3 charity that started in 2016 with the vision of making healthcare one of the most safe, best, and accessible resources for transgender Idahoans.
The Idaho Transgender Healthcare Advocacy Coalition’s mission is to progress Idaho towards a more live-able status for transgender people. We provide transgender Idahoans a high quality healthcare resource database; education to businesses and organizations surrounding transgender issues; and political advocacy in coalition with other organizations in the interest of transgender healthcare and well-being. Compassion, understanding, awareness, and advocacy are at the heart of what we do and inform the framework that guides our mission.
WHAT WE DO
Our first, and most important, service is the Transgender Healthcare Resources Database (THReD). This service, coming in 2017, provides information on offices, hospitals, professionals, and other areas in the arena of healthcare that can provide transgender specific healthcare and/or are transgender friendly/knowledgeable. THRED provides a safe, high-quality verification process for such resources. This is done to preserve the health, lives, and safety of transgender folks. THRED’s process involves questionnaire, interview, and medical license verification. THRED is an innovative, high-quality, and safe service for transgender folks and is a necessary cornerstone of combating institutional oppression.
Education services are another key aspect of ITHAC. This service focuses on working with business, healthcare facilities, and other key institutions on ways they can serve and assist transgender folks in Idaho in the best way possible. Education will be provided by experienced professionals in the subject that is being instructed. All education services will be screened and reviewed by ITHAC prior to approval. The implications of this service are positive visibility of transgender folks and breaking down institutional barriers that harm transgender folks.
Protecting Your Rights
The political advocacy branch is a necessary component to combat anti-transgender legislation that damages and prevents access to necessary healthcare. The political advocacy branch is therefore a reactive-only force to statewide and local legislation. This program is also responsible for designing the issue-stances ITHAC upholds that intersect with transgender healthcare. Our political advocacy branch operates as a non-significant part of program funding and includes various activities such as lobbying, letter-writing campaigns, advocacy awareness, and much more. Though one of our smaller programs, it makes up for it in its potential to change transgender healthcare in a positive way on the political level.
Working Together; One Goal
An important part of what we do, ITHAC works with various other partner organizations and programs across Idaho to make our vision a reality. Through resourceful strategy, strong communications, and lasting relationships - ITHAC and its partners are building a coalition to serve transgender Idahoans on all fronts, not just healthcare. Just because our issues we deal with are complex, doesn't mean we have to do it alone - and we definitely don't!
